Jesus Is Mighty God!

Isaiah 9:6 6 For to us a child is born,

    to us a son is given;

and the government shall be upon his shoulder,

    and his name shall be called

Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Who is this child?

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together (Colossians 1:15-17).

The Christ child is Mighty God!

What does it mean that Jesus is “Mighty God”? This child has been called a “godlike warrior,” but the use of Mighty God later in Isaiah 10:21 is clearly referring to Yahweh/God. Jesus is not merely a “godlike warrior”—He is one with the Creator. He is the very Word that spoke creation into being! Oh, the mystery of the incarnation! This babe in a manger is God—as the hymnwriter professed, He is the “fullness of God in helpless babe.” And as Paul says, “All things were created through Him and for Him…in Him all things hold together!” Jesus is Mighty God!

There are at least three primary miracles at Christmas that display our Mighty God!

  1. A Virgin conceived a son. This doesn’t happen—unless God wants it to happen. Yet, think about it this way. If God is the creator of the cosmos and the smallest micro-organisms—and everything in between—and He holds literally all things together,  how truly hard is it to believe the Holy Spirit could conceive the Christ child in the virgin’s womb?

  2. God became flesh in the Christ child. Mighty God stepped into our mess in the flesh! Yet, think about it this way. That is just like our God—He is personal. He walked with Adam and Eve in the garden. He called and chose Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He raised the Israelites to be a light to the nations. He led His people out of slavery into the Promised Land. He appointed Kings like David. He spoke by the prophets. Now, in the babe Christ, God is becoming the most personal.

  3. People believe it! That you believe it! Satan really doesn’t want you to believe it. Faith only happens by the power of the Holy Spirit! Honestly, I have no choice but to believe it. The Holy Spirit has captured me by faith in God’s Son! There is no other place to look for love, life, truth, and lasting peace than Jesus! I pray the same is true for you.

I’m a student of history and over the years I’ve read books about the rise of postmodernism. I’ve read about the enlightenment, the rise of humanism and even secular humanism. Sorry to throw out a lot of big “ism” words. Here is what I’ve found: Postmodernism and humanism (especially secular humanism) lie.

Postmodernisms’ lie is “truth is subjective, relativeyou can make or create your own truth.God asks, “How is the postmodern lie working for you all? My truth is objective. Truth is tangible. Jesus is Truth!”

Secular humanism’s lie is “mankind can fix the problems of the worldthrough science and technologymankind has the power to fix the world.” God asks, “How is that working for you all? I love your creativity, science, and technological advances. I want you to explore my creation. We’ll see how you use AI watch out; some of your advances can have unintended consequences. Yet, I have some questions for you. Can you create life? Your scientists can’t create cells. We can’t even figure out entirely how cells work! Can you defeat the temptations of Satan? No. You still think you can be god! Can you solve sin’s problem? No. Selfishness, evil, violence, power, pride, envy, sexual immorality, etc. continue unabated. Can you solve death itself? No. Death still rears its ugly head for young and old. Can you bring peace to the earth? No. It appears humans bring more chaos than peace.

Enter Jesus—your Mighty God. The One from heaven sent to crush the lies of the Evil One, destroy sin by swallowing all of it for the world on Calvary’s cross, and ultimately put death to death by His bodily resurrection.

May the glory and truth of the Gospel provide your heart and home with peace this Christmas season!
